The first day has come and gone, and I must say that it was a whirlwind of success! It's amazing how stressed out I get every year... thinking "Will I remember how to teach" "What do I do with a class full of kids ALL day long" and more questions that keep me awake weeks before school even begins. However, I always manage to make it through and the kids do too!
I will say that I was rushing out the door right after dismissal to pick up this little cutie because being gone from her all day did make my mommy heart ache a tad! And, this dress from The Mint Julep was the PERFECT first day of school dress... sleeveless, but not thin straps, loose and flowy, and an appropriate length!
Okay, now on to what really matters... what we did at school today! I snapped these pictures of all my kiddos next the chalkboard that I use for EVERYTHING! This is my sweet niece who is in 2nd grade, but not in my class this year :(. She may just become my little model ;)
When the kiddos walked in they started working on their B2S memory book. It was the perfect thing to keep their attention while I greeted students, took up school supplies, and talked dismissal with parents. We will work on 1-2 pages each day this week so that they can always remember their first weeks in 2nd grade!
Aren't I pretty?! ;)
We did manage to squeeze a little math in today! We started with our math tools exploration and used the recording sheet from my Let's Get Started unit!
I think I've mentioned that our school-wide theme this year is "Learning is Sweet!" Well, I wanted to incorporate that somehow today because I am all about a theme :) My students made this little candy craft from the same unit that the Memory Book comes from! I have another class that needs to complete this writing prompt which will help fill my bulletin board up!
I think this took all of 25ish minutes to complete from start to finish. Not bad for the first day!
And, it ended up being a great assessment tool for me. I know who can/cannot form sentences, which words they are having trouble with, and so much more! You don't always have to give a formal test or worksheet to see how your kiddos are doing, that's for sure!
Using the letter "y" for the word "I" is a common mistake that my ELL kiddos make, so we will be focusing on that right away!

Oh, and my sweet Momma and Daddy sent me these flowers to wish me a Happy First Day of School!
Now I'm off to rest, eat, rest, shower, and sleep. Can you tell I'm exhausted?!
