Presidents’ Day Activities and FREEBIES

Presidents’ Day is right around the corner, so I wanted to share several activities with you as well as THREE Freebies you can add to your classroom this year.

Presidents’ Day Books

These books are mentioned in this blog post:

  1. Grace for President
  2. Looking at Lincoln
  3. When Penny Met POTUS
  4. Weird But True: US Presidents

Grace for President

Grace decides she will be the first woman president after learning that the United States has never had a female president. This book introduces students to the voting process in an entertaining way. Grace is inspiring, courageous, and very persistent. Here are three activities for Presidents’ Day to go along with this story:

  1. Students draw Grace and write about her character traits.
  2. Students complete a booklet to record what the President’s job entails.
  3. Students create a Future Voter badge and showcase the three types of sentences on the ribbons.

When I Am President

This next activity pairs perfectly with Grace for President. After learning about the roles of the President, students envision themselves as a president one day. They write about what they will do when they are the President.

Read-Aloud: Looking at Lincoln

Looking at Lincoln is a beautiful story about a little girl who wants to know who Abraham Lincoln really was. She discovers many interesting facts about our 16th President. Here are three activities you can do with this story:

  1. Students draw Abraham Lincoln and write facts about the President.
  2. Students answer questions about the main purpose of the text. They identify what mattered to Lincoln the most.
  3. Students create a fact booklet to record information about Abraham Lincoln.

Read-Aloud: When Penny Met POTUS

Have you ever read When Penny Met POTUS? It is such a fun story about a little girl whose mother works for POTUS. She spends the entire day trying to find out just who POTUS really is! This is a great book to use with writing a summary. Students piece together the parts of a summary with the SWBST framework. This activity (with more description) is included in the FREEBIE!

Creating the Washington Monument

My kids LOVE the Weird But True books. The US President version does NOT disappoint. It’s not a book you would sit and read all at once, but it’s a great one to spread out over a period of time. After learning about George Washington, students can create a 3D model of the Washington Monument. They just simply fold and glue on the glue tab to create the monument.
