Said Goodbye to My Teacher's Desk and Hello to Organization!

Well, I finally did it!  I said goodbye to my teacher's desk today.  After reading several teacher blogs and looking at classroom pictures, I decided that I should try something new.  So, today I went up to the school and cleaned out that chunky piece of furniture!  I sorted all of my supplies into buckets and made a list of labels that I needed to make.  Then, I pushed and pulled that huge desk into the hallway!  I hope that it helps  open up my room and give me more options for furniture placement!

This is a fun organizational tool that I found at Hobby Lobby for about $1.  I am going to hang it on my white board.  I had some letters left over from the project I posted about yesterday.  I think it turned out pretty cute!

Here are the labels that I made for all of my buckets and tubs.  You can print them on labels (Avery Template 5163) or on regular paper.  I prefer labels so that I don't have to cut and laminate, but to each his own!  There are 7 pages of labels included in the link below:

My life goal is to get rid of my teacher's desk! The one I'm "inheriting" is gigantic and unattractive... hopefully that will inspire me to say goodbye to it!!

Magnificent Multiagers!

I’ve tried and tried and tried to get rid of my desk… But the fact is, that there comes a time in your life when your body NEEDS an adult chair and desk to sit at. I don’t use it during the day when my kiddos are in school, but when they leave and I have to do anything that requires sitting, I need my chair and my desk. And when we have teacher workdays and I have to do report cards and any other type of paper work, I need my desk.
I do let my kiddies use my desk during the day. In fact, they love it!

I got rid of my desk about two months after school started. I hate clutter and it was such a relief to get rid of the huge thing! I've been looking for something like the tub you have from Hobby Lobby so I'll be making a trip to the store soon! Thanks for the idea!

I will definitely take pictures! I will still have a teacher chair that I use at my horseshoe/small group table. That is the place where I normally end up working anyways! I will also have a small area for my computer. I plan on using some sort of bookcase for my office supplies. I guess I will see how it all works in August!

I actually have never had a teacher's desk. I just started teaching last year, but I ditched that thing the day I walked into the classroom. It was HUGE! I store all of my stuff on a book shelf and most of my stuff is mine and the kids (markers, etc) so it's not a big deal to not have a desk. Though I will say I ran into issues with things that should be locked away (like confidential files, etc) but ended up throwing them in the top of a locking cabinet so it ended up not being a big deal either. I need to work on organization myself this year. We shall see. lol

You are brave!!! I've been feeling like getting rid of my desk now for about 6 months and I'm on the verge but I have this lingering feeling about wanting a home base. I'm teaching summer school starting next week and know I won't have one so I'm hoping that will give me the jump start I need for the school year. I'll update on my blog in August when I'm allowed into my own room to make decisions!

I wish I could get rid of mine! I put in a work order, but due to storage limitations...my principal won't allow me to move the desk out of my room
BOO!

I got rid of my desk, too! I never used it and ended up always using my small-group table anyway. I love the space it has cleared up in my room! Thanks for sharing your organizing ideas and labels. I'd love to see pics when you're all done!

Oooh, I'd love to get rid of my desk - I'll look forward to hearing how you go through your school year without it. If you have success, maybe I'll get brave! :)

I got rid of my desk over a year ago. I use tables instead of desks with my students and I have 2 small rolling chairs that I sit on with the students at their tables. The kids love it that I'm sitting with them when and if I sit.
